SEO and agent-readiness: overlap and differences

SEO, AI-answer visibility and technical agent access overlap, but they answer different questions. Use the measurement that matches the outcome you want to improve.

Two disciplines, two readers

SEO is a wider discipline than keywords and backlinks. It covers indexing, crawlability, site structure and relevance to the query a person types, and ranking on a results page is the outcome that gets measured. Agent-readiness is built around a different set of surfaces: llms.txt, structured data, response headers and well-known manifests, where an agent is the reader and the page may never be seen by a person at all. A site can rank well on Google and still be opaque to an agent, and a site can be highly legible to agents while ranking modestly in classic search.

Where Google's AI features fit

Indexing and search match are the classic SEO pair, and they are the input Google's own AI search features build on. Google states that its generative features in Search are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems, so a page that indexes and ranks well feeds directly into AI Overviews and similar results inside Google Search. That connection does not extend to source citation from an assistant that retrieves outside a search index, which depends on whether the model can read the content cleanly and corroborate it elsewhere, and it does not extend to API action at all, which depends on machine-readable surfaces classic SEO never touched.

The gap is widening

As people ask assistants instead of typing queries, ranking is not the only question. Whether the model can read the site cleanly and is willing to cite it matters too, and that depends on the discovery and content surface rather than on keyword density. A site that wants all four outcomes has to work on both sides, and the agent-readiness side, source citation and API action, is the one most teams have not started.
